Clínica Alemana and Mi Causa Mi Mega drive organ donation
The launching of this partnership materialized in a ceremony attended by the representatives of different areas in this healthcare center and of the TV channel.
From January through September this year, there were a total of 140 organ donors at national level. According to the Transplant Corporation, this number is insufficient, considering the more than 1,700 patients in the waiting list to be transplanted in Chile.
In order to promote donations, Clínica Alemana joined the campaña #CumpleMiDeseo, driven by Mi Causa Mi Mega. This initiative calls to "Share Life" and its purpose is to invite people to express their decision to be an organ donor by means of a statement, so that the family is aware of his/her will, so that this will is respected (see insert).
The partnership was launched October 18th, in a ceremony that gathered authorities and members of different areas in Clínica Alemana, in addition to representatives of the TV channel, among others, journalist Felipe Gerdtzen, head of the Mi Causa Mi Mega Project, and actor Francisco Melo.
On the occasion, the medical director of Clínica Alemana, doctor Juan Hepp, highlighted this joint initiative. “This represents an effort on the part of the media and the community to work on a matter involving a great debt we as a country have. In Spain, for instance, there are 30 donors per each million inhabitants and in some of or neighboring countries, there are in excess of 10, while we, in recent year, had approximately six (…). For this reason, by bringing the issue of organ donation to the public awareness, we are doing a tremendous job to reconcile ourselves with this health problem (…). I invite you to be part of this quest. I am deeply moved by and happy for this impulse,” he said.
This specialist is recognized by his achievements in this field, since he was the one who conducted the first liver transplant in Chile, in 1985; he is also one of the founders of the Chilean Transplant Corporation and has worked for the development of this areas from different fields of action at national level.
Commitment with Transplant
Clínica Alemana is part of the National Transplant Organization and has historically been committed with the development of this medical area and with organ donation.
In this manner, this Center has available a highly specialized Transplant Unit, formed by a coordinator nurse and a multi-discipline team that includes the areas of kidney, liver, heart, lung and tissue. This organizational structure enables timely action and high quality and safety standards.
A significant portion of patients transplanted here come from the public sector and, therefore, their treatments have been funded by FONASA and Clínica Alemana´s Welfare Program.
"Fulfill My Wish"
Those who want to be donors need to access www.alemana.cl/CumpleMiDeseo and express their wish by means of a statement that will be maintained in the database of the National Coordinator for Organ and Tissue Procurement and Transplant of the Health Ministry. Clínica Alemana´s goal is for 3 thousand people to declare their will of being donors.
